MESSAGE FROM 2022 AIA JAPAN PRESIDENT

2022年AIAジャパン代表からのご挨拶

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the members, friends, and sponsors of AIA Japan who collaborated with us and supported our activities in 2022. Please review our annual report 2022 from the following link.  We look forward to continuing to work with you in the new year.

Tomoaki Tanaka, AIA, 2022 President

president’s 2021 annual report

It was an honor and a privilege to serve AIA Japan as a president in 2021.

AIA Japan could come through a year that was full of global challenges. Yet we have grown much more despite the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic; we now have about 1,000 friends in 50 countries, which is a 150% increment. Also, we built strong relationships with the Japan Institute of Architects and Urban Land Institute Japan. In fact, this year was very successful.

We continued adapting our strategic plan and took steps forward to ensure our memberships get more benefits and enjoy new activities; AIA Japan CES and Program & Event committee held 21 varieties of online lecture series and events, providing 22 credits for Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) out of 33.5 CES credits in total. We also pursued AIA’s commitment to Climate Action, Sustainability, EDI, and Emerging Professionals, and I had opportunities to participate as a panelist in the ULI Asia Pacific Summit for Young Leaders Group Forum “Guidelines for the Future – Sustainable Leadership for a World in Transition” and as a keynote speaker in the United Nations` SGBF virtual side event, which was a part of the HLPF. AIA Japan EP/AXP committee provided a webinar with NCARB for emerging professionals to improve career development, and the lecture was held as part of our ongoing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. This year an MOU between AIA Japan and ULI Japan was established. In the end, our revenue and profit have tripled without sacrificing the quality of the benefits for our memberships.

More than 60 dedicated volunteers including members, lecturers, presenters, and award jurors, have supported us through this difficult time. I thank all the volunteers of the 2021 and would like to particularly thank our vice-president Tomoaki Tanaka, secretary Tetsuya Yaguchi, treasurer Leo Nishimura, PR Director Daishi Yoshimoto, Sponsorship Director Michel Van Ackere, Program & Event Director Yumiko Yamada, Architecture Tour Director, Akira Nakamura, Design Award Director George Kunihiro, EP/AXP Director Balazs Bognar, CES Committee Chair, Richard Moriwaki, Regional Representative Committee Chair, Shinya Yamada, Chapter Historian, James Lambiasi, AIA IR Vice-President Scott Gold, Award Committee member, Anna Anikeev, Maxim Maximovitch, Jeff Maeshiro, Membership committee member, Yumi Noguchi, and lastly CES Committee member, James Scott Brew for their tremendous efforts to elevate AIA Japan to the next level.

While saying goodbye to the 2021 board, I am looking forward to 2022 and feel certain that our new board of AIA Japan will lead us to more exciting and great opportunities.

Sincerely,

Segene Park, AIA, 2021 President of AIA Japan

president’s 2017 annual report

2017 was a tremendous year for AIA Japan. We increased our membership to 78, had more participation in our meetings, local activities and overseas events than ever before, and developed stronger and more meaningful relationships with other societies, including JIA (Japan Institute of Architects), SAME (Society of American Military Engineers), ACCJ (American Chamber of Commerce Japan), UIA (International Union of Architects), and PechaKucha…

AIA Japan becomes a General Incorporated Association (Ippan Shadan Hojin) 2016

AIA Japan has established a general incorporated association (ippan shadan hojin) status as of December 14th, 2016. It was a long-time wish of the chapter and a promise to AIA National. As we celebrated our 10th anniversary, our directors decided that it was high time we finally put our real efforts into this procedural endeavor. Eight individuals volunteered to take responsibility in becoming the official initiators and went through complex paperwork in the second half of 2016. We experienced some delays, but with only two weeks remaining in our anniversary year, the general incorporated association was finally established. Now AIA Japan is a legally registered corporation governed by laws of Japan. The eight initiators are George Kunihiro, FAIA; Scott Gold, AIA; Hisaya Sugiyama, AIA; Richard Moriwaki, AIA; Jim Lambiasi, AIA; Michel van Ackere, AIA; Daishi Yoshimoto, AIA; and Jun Mitsui, AIA.
