online lecture: Possibilities of In-Between Space

SUMMARY:
This talk examines architectural design processes between Japan and a global constellation of creators, cultures and contexts through time and space.  Notions of translation will be explored as a dynamic, creative process of transformation through examples ranging from Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel in comparison to his Midway Gardens design in Chicago, to the work of contemporary architects from Kengo Kuma to RCR and beyond.!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After attending this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe building design strategies for international projects with differing site conditions.

  2. Discuss the translation of design ideas in various cultural frameworks between various countries including Japan and the United States. 

  3. Describe design construction processes with varying building code regulations. 

  4. Describe lessons learned from post-occupancy evaluation of historic structures.
