MISSION:

The mission of the AIA Japan Design Awards Program is to encourage excellence in architectural design and planning, and to provide an avenue through which architects may gain recognition by their peers and the public. The ultimate goal is to raise the standards of architectural design excellence for both the architectural community and the public.

ELIGIBILITY and ENTRY FEE:

Entrants must be AIA firms (At least 50% of employees must be AIA members), AIA members assigned to Japan chapter, or AIA members with project in Japan in good standing, including Architect, Associate and International Associate, and AIA honorary members. The membership has to be valid and active as of November 15th, 2023. Entrants must be able to claim authorship or significant authorship of the project being considered.


Entry Fee

  • 10,000 JPY or 100 USD (Including overseas transactions and foreign exchange handling fees) per entry

Individuals are permitted to submit multiple entries, and projects can enter multiple categories without restriction.

The 2023 AIAJ DESIGN AWARD ENTRY FORM is designed for single-category selection per entry. Kindly check only one category that best aligns with your project. Failure to adhere to this guideline may result in disqualification.


AWARDS

  • AIA Japan Award (優秀賞)

  • Honorable Mention (佳作賞)

The jury shall determine the number of awards for each category. The jury may decide not to award any submitted projects in any category.


ENTRY CATEGORIES

  • Entries must be submitted for one of four categories in either built or unbuilt project described below.

  • These entry categories are used to clarify the different entry requirements.

  • Entry of the same project into multiple categories is acceptable.


1. BUILT PROJECT

A. Architecture Small Project

  1. Single-family detached home or less than 500 square meters of gross floor area

  2. Eligible entries may be either new construction or renovation. These projects must be built work, which have been completed between January 1, 2018 and October 31, 2023.

  3. For multiple building projects, the Architect submitting the project (or portion thereof) shall provide detailed evidence of authorship of the relevant portion of the project.

  4. Associate members are not eligible to make entries to this category.

B. Architecture Large Project:

  1. More than 500 square meters of gross floor area

  2. Eligible entries may be either new construction or renovation. These projects must be built work, which have been completed between January 1, 2018 and October 31, 2023.

  3. For multiple building projects, the Architect submitting the project (or portion thereof) shall provide detailed evidence of authorship of the relevant portion of the project.

  4. Associate members are not eligible to make entries to this category.

C. Interior Architecture

  1. Eligible entries may be large or small in scope and may involve new construction or renovation. These projects must be built work, which have been completed between January 1, 2018 and October 31, 2023.

  2. Associate members are not eligible to make entries to this category.

D. Urban Planning

  1. Eligible entries may be urban design projects, planning projects, civic amenity improvements, campus plans, environmental programs, or redevelopment projects. Projects should not be individual buildings. Incomplete projects or ongoing projects may be recognized if a significant portion has been completed or implemented by a local jurisdiction or authority since January 1, 2018.

  2. Associate members are not eligible to make entries to this category.


2. UN-BUILT PROJECT

This category may include competition entries, or speculative work that is not intended for construction.

A. Architecture

  1. Eligible entries may be either new construction or renovation. These projects must be unbuilt work, which have been created between January 1, 2018 and October 31, 2023.

  2. For multiple building projects, the Architect submitting the project (or portion thereof) shall provide detailed evidence of authorship of the relevant portion of the project.

  3. Associate members are eligible to make entries to this category

B. Interior Architecture

  1. Eligible entries may be large or small in scope and may involve new construction or renovation. These projects must be unbuilt work, which have been completed between January 1, 2018 and October 31, 2023.

  2. Associate members are eligible to make entries to this category


COMPLETE SUBMISSIONS

For each project entry, the submitted material should be sufficient for the jury to assess the design intent. Entries must be submitted in the manner specified below.

1. The web-based file Transfer IBM/PC format containing the following;

  1. A minimum of six and a maximum of 15 images, which should include photographs as well as graphic information, such as floor plans and /or site plan, building sections and diagrams in a high resolution (300 dpi or higher) of minimum A5 size, JPG format.

  2. Indicate two images out of submitted images as the best representation of the project. (These images from all submitted projects to be displayed at the Award Ceremony Event.)

  3. Project description in text format (narrative and/or bullet points and no illustrations) of 50 to 300 words in English only in both Word-file and PDF-file.

  4. PDF file of the release forms signed by all copyright holders of images and photographs submitted to the AIA Japan Award. Please refer to PUBLICATION.

2. The web-based transferred file shall be named with the architect’s first and last name, project name, submission category, and year.

3. Fill in and attach the list of submitted item form with each project submittal.

Please make sure that there will be no indications identifying the entrant on submitted images or written description. Also, please note that project description must be written in ENGLISH. A violation of this rule may result in elimination of the submission entry without notice to the entrant.


PUBLICATION

The entrant is responsible for clearing copyrights of all drawings, and photographs included in the submission for publicity purposes. Entrants are also responsible for any royalties, copyright or photographic fees. Entrants shall provide a release statement indicating that the owners of this material, the authors of the drawings, and photographers who hold any copyrights, have authorized the release of their materials for publication. SCHEDULE

1st Step: Submission of Entry Form and Entry Fees

By 5pm on November 17th - 24th, Friday 2023

Entry Form must be submitted no later than the day specified above. Entry Fee must be remitted by the deadline specified above. E-mailed Letter of Intent, with a proof of electrical remittance to the designated bank account, is acceptable.

  • A Design Awards Program entry acknowledgment, release form and list of submitted items, will be e-mailed to each entrant upon receipt of filled entry forms

  • The entry fee will not be refundable once remitted to AIA.

Your complete submission is required to be received by AIA Japan by the deadline specified above. There will be no exceptions. Please send the files through the web-based file Transfer with required documents to the E-mail address shown above.

3rd Step: Presentation

  • The awards will be presented during the year-end event on December 17th, Sunday 2023.

  • Award winners must make a 5- 10 minutes presentation (video record, online, or in-person) of their entry project at the reception.

  • AIA Japan Chapter encourages all entrants to attend the AIA Japan Design Award Ceremony at the AIA Event.
