Wright and Modernism: Defining Space
The next seminar in the Wrightian Architectural Archives
Japan inaugural seminar series, aimed at promoting greater
cultural awareness of Frank Lloyd Wright's work and ongoing
legacy in Japan, is scheduled for Oct. 14, 2006 in Tokyo.
The special event is being cosponsored by the American Institute
of Architects, Japan Chapter, and takes place in a historic
building that was recently renovated.
The featured speakers are renowned architect Hisao Kohyama,
Hon. FAIA, former Dean of Architecture, University of Tokyo,
and Yoshito Tomioka, Associate Professor, Graduate School
of Engineering, Mie University. Both men have published
widely on Frank Lloyd Wright and his contemporaries.
Prof. Kohyama studied under Louis Kahn at the University
of Pennsylvania, is President of Kohyama Atelier and also
currently teaches at the University of the Air. Active both
in Japan and overseas, his signature projects, many of which
have received national design awards, include the Saint
André Church Chapel in Tokyo, the Saitama Arts Foundation
and the Seigakuin Chapel and Lecture Hall, for which he
received the 2005 Japan Art Academy Award.
Prof. Tomioka studied at Tokyo University and Kohyama Atelier.
After earning his doctorate, he moved to Mie University
in 1994. In 1997, he was a visiting scholar at the University
of Pennsylvania and in 2002, he established the Tsu-based
Architectural Design Studio with several partners. In 2005,
his translation of Frank Lloyd Wright and Lewis Mumford:
