Historic Preservation and Urban
Communities: Lessons from New York and TokyoN
How important is Historic Preservation to the quality
of a city? How can urban communities save their shared
memories enshrined in old buildings in the face of relentless
economic pressure to replace old buildings with new
ones?
These and more questions will be explored at a panel
discussion co-sponsored by The Institute of Contemporary
Japanese Studies, Temple University, Japan Campus, and
the Embassy of the United States of America.
The distinguished panel will include the following experts
in the field:
* Dr. Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel: Chairwoman
of The New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation, television
host and producer, and author of "The Landmarks
of New York" and eighteen other books.
* Alex Kerr: Noted expert on Asia and Gakugeisho Literary
Prize winning author of "Lost Japan," and
"Dogs and Demons: Tales from the Dark Side of Japan"
a provocative critique of the Japanese Doken Kokka (Construction
State) and the political culture which sustains it.
Also, chairman of the Iori Foundation, which is dedicated
to restoring machiya (old Kyoto homes) and offering
them as places for travelers to stay.
* Yoshiro Takishita: A professional antiquarian and
architect, Takishita has restored over 30 Minka farm
houses in Japan, and has been influential in raising
awareness of the importance historic preservation.
* The panel will be moderated by Dr. Geeta Mehta, Professor
of Architecture and Urban Studies (adjunct) at Temple
University, Japan Campus, a practicing architect and
author. |
