Subject:
Aya will talk about the formation of the modern idea of
open spaces in Japan, with specific focus on western influences
on the designation of open spaces in Tokyo during Meiji
period. Particularly, she will focus on different interpretations
of modern open spaces by different agents, such as providers,
creators, and users within the specific project, the construction
of Hibiya Park. Through examining political debates, designing
process and public opinions about the Park, she she will
then illustrate how modern idea of urban park was initially
formed in Japan.
Biography of Aya Sakai:
Aya Sakai is a registered architect in Japan. Her interest
in open spaces led her to take master degree of landscape
architecture in Harvard University. After having been trained
as a landscape architect in Boston, US, for a couple years,
she moved to Oxford and then London, UK. With the dissertation
titled "Open Spaces and the Modern Metropolis: Evolution
and Preservation in London and Tokyo (c.1830-c.1930),"
Aya recently took her PhD degree from University of London.
Currently, she is a lecturer in Yokohama National University.
