Continuing Education

CES, or the Continuing Education System, is a program established by the AIA in order to emphasize to members the importance of continued learning within the profession of architecture. All AIA members are required to participate in educational activities and acquire at least 18 Learning Units per year, of which at least 8 must be classified as Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW). For more information about the AIA CES program, please refer to the AIA web page here.

In the past AIA members living in Japan have had difficulty gaining access to many CES events and have therefore not been able to fulfill their obligation to earn 18 LU hours annually. A goal of AIA Japan, therefore, has been to provide members access to educational events and lectures that are registered with the AIA CES program, allowing them to satisfy this yearly quota. As a first step, we are currently co-sponsoring lectures with theTokyo Planning Forum that take place approximately every 2 months. In addition to this we will provide AIA Japan members with information about educational activities throughout the country that we have registered with the AIA CES program and are therefore valid for learning units. Please check the events calendar of this homepage frequently to keep up on our latest scheduled events.

There are also many educational events that are not necessarily sponsored by AIA Japan or another AIA CES Provider. The "Self Report Form" is a method of reporting your educational activities to the AIA so that you may claim credit. You may access this form by following the instructions here. (Please note that this is only for non-AIA Japan events, for our own events we will still continue to provide sign-up sheets at the event)

The AIA Japan CES Committee is very interested in your ideas for future CES events. Please contact us regarding this at ces@aiajapan.org.
